London Eye, United Kingdom

Originally known as the Millennium Wheel, the London Eye is a cantilevered observation wheel located in London on the South Bank of the Thames River. With more than three million people a year, it is the tallest cantilevered observation wheel in the world and the most visited paid tourist destination in the UK. It has appeared in popular culture several times. The wheel is 120 meters (394 feet) in circumference, and the structure is 135 meters (443 feet) tall. It was the tallest Ferris wheel in the world when it first opened to the public in 2000, but in 2006 the 160-meter (525-foot) Star of Nanchang in China overtook it. The Eye is cantilevered and only supported by an A-frame on one side, in contrast to taller wheels. Up until 2013, the 245-meter (804-foot) View from The Shard observation deck overtook The Eye as the highest public viewing location in London.

Located in the London Borough of Lambeth, on the South Bank of the River Thames between Westminster Bridge and Hungerford Bridge, next to County Hall, the London Eye borders the western end of Jubilee Gardens, which was once the location of the historic Dome of Discovery. Waterloo is the closest tube station.

The husband and wife partnership of Marks Barfield Architects, Julia Barfield and David Marks, created the London Eye.The Eye's rim, which resembles a massive spoked bicycle wheel, is held aloft by tensioned steel wires . In order to enable digital control of the lights instead of manually replacing gels over fluorescent tubes, the lighting was redone in December 2006 using LED lighting from Color Kinetics.
