The Salzkammergut is an Austrian resort region that stretches eastward from Salzburg to the Dachstein Mountains' summits via the Alpine Foreland and the Northern Limestone Alps. The Traun, a right tributary of the Danube, is the region's principal river. The term Salzkammergut means "salt demesne Kammergut," which is German for "lands held by princes of the Holy Roman Empire," in this case the Habsburg monarchy's lands in early modern Austria. The Imperial Salzoberamt in Gmunden oversaw the management of the Salzkammergut salt mines from 1745 until 1850.The Salzkammergut Mountains and the nearby Dachstein Mountains, the Totes Gebirge, the Upper Austrian Prealps, with the imposing Mt. Traunstein in the east, and a number of glacial lakes and elevated bogs make up the territory along the Traun River's coast. Flysch and bright limestone (karst) rocks define the steep mountain slopes.Despite being the region's namesake, the salt mining sector currently makes up a very small portion of the local economy. The importance of the forest industry has increased. Ebensee, Gmunden, Laakirchen, and Steyrermühl are examples of industrial locations.Additionally, the Salzkammergut benefits from its history of small enterprises and trading firms, many of which were founded as a result of the salt mining industry.
