The commune of Rocamadour is located in the southwest French department of Lot. It is located in what was once Quercy province. It belongs to the association known as Les Plus Beaux Villages de France, or The Most Beautiful Villages of France.Since the turn of the 12th century, Rocamadour has drawn historical and anonymous pilgrims from many nations, including kings, bishops, and nobles (including Henry II of England, Simon de Montfort, Blanche of Castile, Saint Louis IX of France, Saint Dominic, and Saint Bernard of Clairvaux, among other notable figures). Its location in a gorge above a tributary of the River Dordogne has also served as a point of attraction for tourists.
Rocamadour, a little goat's-milk cheese that was granted AOC designation in 1996, gets its name from the hamlet that stands along the river on the lowest slopes, behind the complex of monastery structures and pilgrimage chapels. Historically, the town was dependent on the pilgrimage site, but today it depends on the tourism industry.
L'Hospitalet, Les Alix, Blanat, Mas de Douze, Fouysselaze, Magès, La Fage, La Gardelle, Chez Langle, La Vitalie, and Mayrinhac-le-Francal are some of the hamlets that are part of the commune of Rocamadour.
Rocamadour appears to aim for heaven as it clings to a precipitous rock. This magnificent location served as a stop on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route and was the third most significant Christian pilgrimage place in the eleventh century.
Steep pedestrian staircases lead to seven shrines from the medieval era located within the hamlet. The most well-known is the Chapelle Notre-Dame (Chapelle Miraculeuse), which houses the priceless Black Virgin (Notre-Dame de Rocamadour) from the 12th century, which is connected to miracles. The Basilique Saint-Sauveur, the biggest church in Rocamadour, is a historic landmark that has been classified by UNESCO. This pilgrimage church from the 13th century exemplifies the Gothic and Romanesque architectural movements.
The Causses du Quercy Regional Nature Park is located beyond the hamlet. AOC-labeled Cabécou de Rocamadour cheese is made from the milk of grazing goats in this pristine region on the Quercy plateaus. The Fête des Fromages (Cheese Festival), which honors the local farmhouse cheeses, takes place in the village of Rocamadour in late May or early June.By road: The Paris-Toulouse RN 20 and A20 highways are fewer than 30 kilometers from Rocamadour.
